Coaching Tools: Thoughts Plus Action Equal Results

August 13, 2009

If your business is not doing as well as you would like it to be then odds are you are lacking a defined goal. Once you have established your goal you need two key elements to achieve your goal, a date and a strategic plan. It would be nice if we could wish things into happening but the truth is that we must establish a time frame and take action if we want to reach our goals.

Set Your Completion Date First

You may think it is odd that I listed set a date first. I did that because it is important to set your goals by setting the date of completion first. Setting the completion date first makes it easier to work backwards from that date and determine what steps you must take to reach the goal.

Set your goal and the completion date then work backwards by setting dates for the completion of the most major tasks necessary. Then work forward filling in the detailed tasks necessary to complete each major task.

Setting the completion date first also ensures that you set in your mind that this is a goal that you will achieve. It helps you remove the “if factor” and makes it a matter of when you will accomplish your goal.

Remember, we our thoughts have a huge impact on what we achieve so why not establish a thought pattern of achievement? Your focus will switch from can I achieve this goal to I must achieve this goal by my deadline.

“Calendarize” Your Process

Large goals are much easier to achieve if you break them down into smaller manageable goals and schedule mini-deadlines for each of those goals. Use a calendar to establish you time line and check off your achievements each day.

The act of accomplishing a small task toward the completion of your long term goal and checking it off every day will build your sense of achievement. You will increase your subconscious confidence by recognizing your success in accomplishing your daily tasks. When you check off the task have a mini celebration of your achievement. This little celebration will have wonderful effects on your subconscious mind.
