Coaching Clients: What They Really Want

December 25, 2008

My experience is that I will make a change only when the pain has risen to the level that I can no longer tolerate it or I am extremely uncomfortable. I would like to say that I am brighter than that but that has not been the way it has played out in my life.

The truth about all coaching clients is that they are human and like all humans, they have certain basic needs and desires. As different as we would like to think we are, all humans have a need for love, feeling valued, purpose, and a desire to be happy.

Coaching Clients Want Something

Coaching clients want something they do not have or they do not want to lose something they do have. A person that goes to a relationship coach could be looking for coaching to help them get the relationship they desire or preserve a relationship that is on the brink of break up. A client that comes to a career coach wants to improve their satisfaction with their choice of work or they may need to make a change on order to succeed in their current position.

Coaching Clients Desire Change

Coaching clients and potential coaching clients do not want

things to remain the way they are. They have experienced enough pain that is has driven them to desire change. The coaching client has reached a point of discomfort that the option of doing nothing is no longer acceptable.

I have always prided my self for self reliance so the idea of seeking help usually comes to me only after I have tried every possible option that I can think of. Most likely, coaching clients have tried many remedies on their own with little success. They have attempted to relieve the discomfort but have had no success or have not experienced relief quick enough.

Coaching Clients are Attracted to Coaches that Understand Them

People in need of coaching are attracted to you when they feel you understand them and their challenges. The old saying “misery loves company”, represents the idea that we take comfort in being with others who share our experience and that we take comfort in communicating with them. Support groups provide comfort and understanding to many people who have a shared negative experience. The deeper understanding of your coaching client the more attractive you will be to them. Potential coaching clients must feel that you understand their needs, challenges, desires and goals. They also must believe that you offer a way to overcome their challenges and solve their problems. You do not have to have all the answers but they must feel you are the person who will help them find the solutions and help them make the necessary changes.
