Coaching Business: Blog vs. Website

December 27, 2008

Smart coaches know they need an internet presence so their first action is to hire a web designer to build a beautiful website. Do not do this! It is important for any business to have an internet presence but an expensive website is not necessary or the best option available. I got a website right away and spent hours working on a template that turned out mediocre at best.

What are the benefits of a website?

A website is more like an electronic brochure. The best thing about a custom website is that it is custom and you can have it exactly the way you want it. I have seen some wonderful custom websites but I never wanted to spend the money to have one made. You can also use a template style website and make modifications that you would like. A website will allow you to

tell people about the services you offer, your coaching style, your coaching niche and if you wish your fee structure.

What are the drawbacks to a website?

The price of custom websites can be vary greatly and not all web designers are created equally. If you choose to work with a web designer, you should check out their portfolio of work and their references very carefully. Great web designers are available and many will design a website for a reasonable price. Be sure your web designer gives you a website that you can make changes to and make sure you have to ability to host your site anywhere.

What are the benefits of a blog?

Blogs are easy and inexpensive to set up. There are several blogging platforms available. I like Typepad because it is easy to use, easy to set up, and they have great customer service. You can have a blog up and running in a little as one hour using Typepad. Blogs are search engine magnets when you update the content frequently. The searchengine spiders are always looking for new material and blogs get high rankings because they are a dynamic platform. I suggest Typepad for

a blogging platform.

Blogs are more personal and are a better way for your clients to get to know, like and trust you. Writing new posts to your blog is a way to add value for your clients and it is a great vehicle for them to get to know you. Blogs tend to be less formal than websites and more informative for clients. If you would like to learn more about blogs and website then check out my home study course "Coaching Business Blast Off".

I suggest you start with a blog then decide if you need a website. Be sure to offer clients something of value free on the blog in exchange for their name and email address. This will allow you to contact them with information or offers in the future.
