5 Things That Can Kill Your Coaching Business

1)     Not defining you niche

I started out calling myself a "Life Coach" and found that did not define what I had to offer clearly enough for people to know how I could help them.  It is impossible to reach a market if you have not clearly defined who that market is and howyou can help them.  Many coaches shy away from defining a niche because they are afraid they will miss some clients if they do not try to appeal to everyone.  By defining your niche, you are better able to relate to potential clients by specifically identifying their needs and how you can help them.

2)     Not working to position yourself as an expert.

I hesitated to present myself as an expert but then I thought who wants help from the average Joe, nobody.  People want to know that you understand them and their needs.  To position yourself as an expert list areas that you have worked in, areas that you are self-educated in, areas that you have experienced difficulty and triumphed, or areas that you have studied as a hobby.

3)     Not getting in front of people so they can get to know you    and what you can do for them.

I didn't like the idea of selling but I quickly figured out that

Get New Coaching Clients: With Networking that Works

Find Strategic Alliance Partners

I tried all sorts of networking events and groups and what I found was most effective for my coaching business was to align myself with some dynamic referral partners.  Strategic alliance partners are an effective tool for success and attract qualified clients. Strategic alliance partners are in businesses that appeal to the same target client that you are looking for.  For example, a weight loss or fitness coach could become allied with a nutritionist, fitness trainer, and massage therapist.  Find three or four people who you feel you can give referrals to and that will have customers that can use your services.  Look for partners that have been in business for a while, know people, and have a client base that is complimentary to yours.

Your Partners Need to Know, Like and Trust You

I found that these relationship need to be nurtured to be productive.  Get to know your partners by meeting together regularly and giving them a sample of your services.  Once they know, like and trust you they will want to give you referrals because it helps them help their clients.  They become a center of influence themselves, they will want to be helpful to you, they believe in your service, and they want to benefit from a cooperative effort.

Become a Valuable Resource

Become a valuable resource for your partners by passing on qualified referrals that are ready to use their services because they trust your recommendation.

You can make others look good by being a person they can refer others to who will make their clients very happy and make them look good for referring you.  Be a customer of the people in your alliance so that you can speak from personal experience about their products.  Connect them to other people who could be resources for their business. Learn exactly how to grown your coaching business with my home study course "Coaching Business Blast Off".

Givers Get

Give away some of your valuable knowledge and materials like a free session, articles, teleclasses or eBooks.  Teach them something like how to have a better sixty-second introduction.  Recommend material that will be helpful to them when you come across it or give away someone else’s material with their permission.  You can also pay a commission for product sales or referrals by creating an affiliate relationship.

Make Them an Offer They Can't Refuse

When you approach people about becoming strategic partners always start with how you can help them.  Find out about their business and co-actively figure out what you can do to help them.  The law of reciprocation will take hold and they will soon be looking for ways to help you in return.  Make it easy for them to refer you by having things they can offer to their clients like free reports, workshops or teleclasses. Learn more client attraction methods with "Coaching Business Blast Off".

Get Coaching Clients: How to Offer an Introductory Session

Talk to people and get the easy yes then offer an introduction session later.

Introductory sessions are the key to getting new coaching clients but asking someone you just met to have an introductory session is like asking someone to marry you on the first date.  Most people need to get to know you, like you and trust you before they will want to have an introductory session and become a client.  Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because your introductory session is free that everyone will see the value and take you up on it right away.  Try offering a “Special Report”, teleclass, or article on a topic they will find interesting.  This allows you to get their contact information and if they say it is OK you can add them to your contact list and continue to build the relationship

Tell people that you would like to work with them and why you want to work with them.

When you come across people you think would be great to work with, let them know that you would like to coach them.  Follow up that statement with the reasons why you think they would benefit from coaching with you.  If you have been listening and asking provocative question during your conversation you will have the information, you need to clarify how coaching could help them.  I find that I have strike me as great potential coaching clients have other great qualities that I can compliment them on.  Most people will be much more open to having an introductory session when they feel valued and heard by you.

Go ahead and offer the introductory session.  Clients cannot say yes until you ask.

If you have had some meaningful conversation and you feel you have made a connection with a person and they will be receptive to an invitation then ask them if they would like to have an introductory session with you.  Let them know this is a great way to experience coaching and see if they feel they would benefit from a coaching relationship.  I believe in the free introductory session if you have designed it to show clients exactly how they will benefit from coaching with you.  You free session should help clients identify their challenges, develop the beginning of a plan to help them, identify the strategy you will apply to address and overcome these challenges and help them achieve their desires and dreams.

What I Learned

1)  Make an offer that is easy for people to accept and get their contact information.

2)  Tell people that you would like to work with them and why.

3)  If you have enough information to know how someone could benefit from an introductory coaching session and trust has been established ask them if they would like to have a session.

4)  Make sure that the introductory session is planned and shows the person how coaching with you will benefit them.

Attract New Coaching Clients with Dynamic and Valuable Workshops

It is easy to attract new coaching clients when you offer something of value to your audience.

Choose a topic that solves a painful problem for your niche.

Clients need to see you as the coach that really understands their challenges, needs, problems and desires.  The best way to determine a topic that strikes a chord with your niche is to survey them to find out what some of their greatest concerns and challenges are.  You can conduct a survey by simply talking to many people in your niche, sending out a simple survey to your niche through email, or using internet tools such as survey monkey.  Many times groups such as trade organizations will allow you to survey their members through the group’s newsletter.

Develop a workshop that helps your audience define their challenge.

People often feel anxious or frustrated but cannot clearly define what their challenge is.  In order for your audience to solve their problems or overcome their challenges, they must clearly define what those challenges are.  People can often tell you what the results of their challenges are but they cannot define what is causing the outcomes they do not desire.  If you are a coach that does not have enough clients to make thing income you desire you feel frustrated by the fact that you love coaching but are not making enough money.  Not making enough money is

Marketing a Coaching Business: Why I Love Marketing

Coaching is Selling and I don't Like Selling!

I know many coaches think as highly of marketing as they do used car salespeople, my apologies to anyone who may be a car salesperson.  I really don't know why that is but I started my career in advertising and marketing so I will confess that I am a little biased.  Let me ask a question…

Teach Others with Your Marketing

Do you think coaching is valuable and do you think people should improve their lives through coaching?  If you think that coaching is a powerful force for change and you believe in your ability to help others improve their lives then you should be excited to tell them about it so they can try it.  Use your marketing as a means of teaching and coaching.  Create marketing materials that help, teach and serve others.  That doesn't mean that these marketing materials cannot also serve
