Coaching Clients: How Do I Build My Contact List?

October 29, 2008

Yeah a shopping cart, that's what I need to build my list!

Yikes! This shopping cart thing is easy to sign up for but that is all that is easy about it!  All I can say is holy crap this makes little or no sense and I'm not sure I will ever be able to learn this and there is so much to learn.  All I can do is start the tutorials but I'm not sure if this is stuff is over my head.  Well, I will give it a try and see what happens.  If worse comes to worse, I will hire one of the tech people they say they have for $40 an hour.  At least they can get me started.  This stuff isn't cheap either so I better get to work getting more clients.

Networking around town

So, I joined BNI and have been going to those meetings and they have been Ok but not super great.  I think I need to find other networking groups to go to as well.  It seems that I do better networking for speaking opportunities that networking for referrals.  Each time I am able to do a workshop, I pick up a client or two so I think I will go with it.  I have had great luck speaking at groups that are into new ways of thinking about spirituality.  The local Unity church has been a great place to meet people that I enjoy and to lead workshops.  I have also found that women are more open to Life Coaching than men.  No, that is not exactly correct…women are  more open to

actually paying for and sticking with Life Coaching.  Men seem to want it but have a hard time finding time or money for it.  I must not be finding the right way to touch their pain and show them that Life Coaching really will help.  I think I will go back and ask a few of the men I have done free sessions for a few question about how I could have done a better presentation for them. What am I going to sell on my website other than coaching services…I need products!

I see that most other websites have products that they offer along with coaching.  I guess I should develop a product.  Product, product, product…what kind of product?  There are several challenges that all my clients seem to face so I should start with one of those.  The most consistent one is weight loss so I will start with that.  After all, I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Weight Managment Consultant too!  I wrote a short book on fitness years ago so that could be a good start.  All good learning tools include a workbook so I should write one of those to go with the book.  I could write and conduct a telecourse on diet, exercise and weight loss then record that and have a "system for weight loss".

Getting more traffic to my website and what to say to people that I just met to get them into a free coaching session or get them on my list.

I have found that when I meet people at a networking event it is not so easy to get them to come in for a free session.  Go figure, it is free but they seem to hesitate.  So I figure they probably need to feel a little more familiar with who I am and what I do first so I had another brilliant idea.  I will write a FREE REPORT that I can send them, after all that is pretty easy to say yes to, and then I will at least be able to put them on my list.  I will give that a try and see how that works.  Time to write a free report about Life Balance.

What I have learned.

1)  You need a shopping cart but give yourself plenty of time to figure this thing out.  You may also need help along the way because this is a steep learning curve.

2)  Networking is OK but speaking opportunities get clients.

3)  Have a product to offer along with coaching.  Some people will want to try a product that is less expensive before committing to coaching.

4)  Have a FREE product that you can offer to people who are not ready to take you up on a free session.  That way you at least get their email so you can put them on your list and they may buy later.
